Miracle FruitThe idea that a slice of fresh lemon could taste sweet may seem ludicrous, but the berry of the Synsepalum dulcificum plant, also known as miracle fruit, can make that a reality. When eaten, the small red berry releases a glycoprotein called miraculin, which binds to the tongue's taste buds and makes bitter and sour foods consumed over the next few hours taste sweet. Researchers are working to develop a miracle fruit sweetener that could benefit people suffering from what disorder? More...

I'd heard about this fruit as a kid on a science show I used to watch "The Curiosity Show" Everyone I had talked to about this fruit since then believed me to be mad. Hmph!
I wonder how the sugar industry would suffer if all had access to this Miracle Fruit.

Miracle fruit parties are all the rage in NYC, and I'm pretty obsessed with the idea of throwing one myself. Anyone been to one or simply tried miracle fruit themselves? Was it as cool as it sounds? What sort of foods did you try at the time and what did they taste like?

Ive never been able to find the fruit myself. Thats why everybody believes Im making it up.

When we filmed that segment at a tropical fruit farm (Mossman, Queensland) the fruit had only a mild taste - slightly sweet but nothing spectacular. The remarkable thing was how it made other things taste afterwards. It left all tastes unaffected except for sour, which was abolished completely, and for some hours. You could eat a lemon and it tasted like the best orange. the shocker for me was trying to drink riesling - normally a somewhat acid drink but, after miracle berries, like the most sickly lolly water. There were plans to add the extract to things like diabetic ice cream, as the effect of sweetness could then be achieved without adding sugar, but I don't know if they proceeded - might have made after-dinner port a bit odd! I had never seen them again until two years ago, when I was in Africa. Rob Morrison. Curiosity Show.

I can't believe I caught your eye Rob! Fromn the very Curiosity Show I just reffered to? The Curiosity Show introduced a 10 year old kid to the joys of science! I still love it. Job well done. if you are able to PM (personal message, click on my profile name to get option to write me a note) me, I'd love to know what your science brain is up to these days. Wow.
