I wonder what will happen, if person A is arguing with person B. Knowingly person A is right and person B is wrong, then where will person B's friends stand?

Yeah, friend is our consolation prize when we lose. Unless "you are in the wrong" be a work of bad advice of good friend... And some don't have even that.

A real friend would balk at a "friend" who supported him in a wrong opinion. Friendship should be formed of stronger stuff than tolerance for faulty or false opinions. A good friendship should be able to withstand criticism from the friend--if that criticism is well-founded. I would not appreciate molly-coddling from someone who purported to be my friend, if that meant supporting my erroneous position!

There is no value in backing up a person in-the-wrong.

Being a "yes" friend can be ok in some circumstances, but for the most part a real friend will not hesitate to let you know when you are getting ready to make a boneheaded choice.

Yeah, that's why the world is getting better and better: because nearly everybody sides with anyone who is in the right.

It is possible to stand by one's friend while, simultaneously, informing them as to how and why they are wrong, right?

In fact, isn't that the best way to stand by your friend?

Then, what should one call those who will side with themselves when they are in the right? Improper friends?

Because "nearly anybody" will side with me when I am in the right, which is not bad, but only a friend will side with me when I am in the wrong.

To Cheryl Magnuson.
You say "There is no value in backing up a person in-the-wrong.". No but if you are a real friend there is.

Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.

...side with you but capable to let you know that you are in the wrong, otherwise you are both in the wrong.

One of my favorite phrases about friendship and bad friends, something that has sat with me deep since I read it the first time: “A false friend and a shadow attend only while the sun shines”. Benjamin Franklin's words.

No doubt Triv, behind the scenes critical support can help make us better people. Is it Proverbs that reads: The slap of a friend is better than the kiss of an enemy.
