The Dead Sea

The lowest body of water on the surface of the Earth, the Dead Sea is a landlocked salt lake bordered by Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan. One of the saltiest water bodies in the world, the Dead Sea hosts few life forms. The high salinity makes bathing here a unique experience, as one cannot help but float in its waters. It is also common practice when visiting the Dead Sea to coat one's body with its mineral-rich mud. What health issues do some people believe the Dead Sea and its mud can cure? More...

You are right. Why the article put 'the West Bank' there, it is not a country like Israel and Jordan. I wonder what is the purpose behind that?

Well, where is Palestine?!! And its people? in refugee camps?

MADRID, 22 June 2010 (IRIN) - For the past 62 years, millions of Palestinians have been living as refugees in areas of the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) and in surrounding host countries - mostly in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has described their plight as “by far the most protracted and largest of all refugee problems in the world today”.

Fast facts.
The total number of displaced Palestinians worldwide is 7.1 million, including:
6.6 million refugees, and 427,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs)
67 percent of all Palestinians worldwide are refugees or IDPs
4,766,670 refugees registered with the UNRWA
UNRWA definition of Palestinian refugees: “People whose normal place of residence was Palestine between June 1946 and May 1948, who lost both their homes and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict.” As a rule, those displaced after 1948 do not qualify for UNRWA assistance
More than one million refugees whose displacement dates back to 1947-1948 are not registered with UNRWA
340,016 Palestinians are registered with UNHCR

I have very limited knowledge about the middle east geography. If the Dead Sea is located around the three countries; then the writer should have stated more clear about it. Thank you for letting me know.

Why the Dead Sea is good for your health and beauty?

Even before Roman times, the Dead Sea had attracted spa-lovers from far and wide.

Today, scientific evidence proves that the Dead Sea can help treat a host of common illnesses. Typical conditions range from joint pain and arthritis to psoriasis and heart problems.
This is because the Dead Sea contains 33 per cent salt and a wealth of magnesium, calcium, potassium and other minerals. It is these minerals combined with the salt, sun and relaxation that are thought to have such a remarkable effect on psoriasis.
Researchers have found that those patients with psoriasis who bathed for an hour a day in the Dead Sea improved by 88 per cent. The water is also said to be effective in treating allergies.

It is claimed, too, that the Dead Sea helps relieve arthritis. This is because warmth and buoyancy reduce the release of prostaglandins - hormone-like substances present in a variety of tissues and body fluids that induce inflammation and therefore pain.
Interestingly, anti-inflammatory drugs found in the chemist are based on the ability to reduce prostaglandins.

Eddie Robinson coached the Grambling football team for 47 years. When he retired he was quoted as saying " When I got here the Dead Sea wasn't even sick."
