Apache Maidens' Puberty Rites

The Apache Maidens' Puberty Rites are a coming-of-age celebration of girls of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, held for four days and nights around the Fourth of July in Mescalero, New Mexico. On the first and last days, the girls run around a basket four times, symbolizing the four stages of life (infancy, childhood, adulthood, and old age). On the last day, their faces are painted with white clay and they enact the role of White Painted Woman, preparing for a rewarding adult life. Other events include a rodeo, a powwow, a parade on July 4, and the nighttime Dance of the Mountain Gods. More...

I have just read that some people are very angry about the Apache helicopters used by the American armed forces.

Because they are used to kill people?

NO.

Because calling them Apache helicopters is "racist."

A bit ironic they are around the fourth of July - 'Independence Day?' - for the pre-European 'Americans' - not so much!

Coming of age in Mescalero

History of the White-Painted Woman

The four-day maiden ceremony reflects the four days needed to create the world and the maidens embody the virtues of the White Painted Woman.

According to stories handed down by tribal elders, the White Painted Woman appeared in the East as a young woman, lived her life and then disappeared in the West, an old, but revered woman, only to reappear in the East young again.

She gave birth to two sons on White Mountain, the Child of Water and the Killer of Enemies. They were born in a turbulent storm and were raised to be brave and skilled. When they grew to be men, they killed the monsters of the earth and there was peace.
