Brazil Sewage Tests Positive for Polio

Air travel has made it easier for people to see the world—and, unfortunately, for infectious agents to hitch a ride along with them. Sewage samples near São Paulo, Brazil, one of the World Cup venues, have tested positive for poliovirus. Brazil has been polio-free since 1989, and the presence of the virus in sewage does not change its status, but it does highlight how easily diseases can be spread from place to place in this day and age. I don't understand how they can find this virus in the waste? Can it survive in the sewer? And how did it get there?

The Brazilian Health Ministry said the presence of people carrying infectious agents from other parts of the world was to be expected as a result of increased international travel.

"It is important to clarify that this detection does not mean any change in the epidemiological situation of Brazil or a threat to the elimination of the disease," it said in a statement.

Brazil has been polio-free since 1989 and the Americas region was declared free of wild polio transmission in 1991, according to the WHO, which is spearheading a global campaign to eradicate polio
