Lincoln Memorial Dedicated (1922)

The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, has been the site of many historic events, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s legendary "I Have a Dream" speech during the 1963 March on Washington. Mr. Lincoln would be more worthy of admiration if he had let the Southern states leave in peace, instead of plunging the nation into the horrific four-year Civil War that took -- at the latest estimates -- about 800,000 soldiers' lives.

Some scholars have theorized that if the South had left, it would have eventually returned to the Union. In regard to slavery, some scholars theorize that it would have been eventually abolished -- peacefully.

The absolute horror of the Civil War still casts a pall over the nation.

A New York congressman recently sarcastically said something like "The South forgets that it lost the Civil War."
