Boston Pops

Henry Lee Higginson, who established the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1881, believed that in the summer, "concerts of a lighter kind of music" should be presented. People began to refer fondly to these summer concerts as "the Pops," a name which became official in 1900. The Boston Pops tailors its programs around American music and musicians, medleys of popular songs, and familiar movements of classical works. Outside of its official concert season at Symphony Hall, where it performs through May and June, the Pops also tours the United States. More...

Tomorrow is a public holiday here. It's called 'Wesak Day', meaning "Buddha's Birthday". All pay respect to that date.

The Boston Pops Presents the "Oz With Orchestra" on May 10 & 11

During this spring's Pops season, audiences can delight in the company of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion from the 1939 classic film "The Wizard of Oz," when the Boston Pops presents a screening of the complete movie with the original vocals and dialogue intact, and the score performed live by the orchestra under the direction of Keith Lockhart. The complete film will play above the Symphony Hall stage as the talented Boston Pops musicians perform "If I Only Had a Brain," "If I Were King of the Forest," and, of course, Judy Garland's magical performance of "Over the Rainbow," ranked the number one song in all of cinema by the American Film Institute.

"The Boston Pops Orchestra performs the best music of the past and present, appealing to the widest possible audience with a broad spectrum of styles, from jazz to pop, indie rock to big band, film music to the great American songbook, and Broadway to classical, making it the perfect orchestra for people who don't know they like orchestras!"
