J. Edgar Hoover Appointed Director of FBI (1924)

As FBI director from 1924 until his death in 1972, Hoover built a more efficient crime-fighting agency and established a centralized fingerprint file, a crime laboratory, and a training school for police. After World War II, he turned to the perceived threat of Communist subversion with a focus that his many critics considered obsessive. It has been verified that he orchestrated systematic harassment of political dissenters and activists, including what celebrated civil-rights leader? More...

Some guy who started with good intentions and considerable success fighting criminals, only to end up as one of the greater crooks himself.

I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger. (Anon)

The Secret Burglary That Exposed J. Edgar Hoover's FBI
by CARRIE JOHNSON
January 07, 2014 2:58 AM ET

More than 40 years ago, on the evening of March 8, 1971, a group of burglars carried out an audacious plan. They pried open the door of an FBI office in Pennsylvania and stole files about the bureau's surveillance of anti-war groups and civil rights organizations.
the burglars were peace demonstrators who wanted to start a debate about the FBI's unchecked power to spy on Americans.

Bonnie Raines was one of those activists, and she's talking publicly about what she did for the first time in 42 years.

"It seemed that no one else was going to stand up to Hoover's FBI at that time, and we knew what Hoover's FBI was doing in Philadelphia in terms of illegal surveillance and intimidation," Raines says. "And we thought somebody needed to confront Hoover and document what many of us knew was happening."

Hundreds of agents tried to identify the culprits, but the crime went unsolved. Until now.

Old J Edgar knew the best defense is attack, whether is was gays or political opponents. During the larger part of his reign his was a big a-hole that even Presixents couldn't control. Harry Truman had him pegged early on.

Does anyone know for sure if J.Edgar Hoover was gay or simply a cross dressing straight man?

I do not know.

But the United States, like almost every other country, has been a model of hypocrisy regarding this subject.

I once read that the American government established a male bordello in New York City during World War II.

The purpose was to have American males "service" foreign merchant ship sailors who sailed into New York City. The American males would try to get the foreign sailors to reveal information that might help the war effort.

P.S. I deciced to say "sailors" rather than "seamen."
