Washington Becomes First Elected US President (1789)

Washington, who served as commander-in-chief of the Continental army in the American Revolution, was elected the first President of the US after the adoption of the Constitution. His two-term administration was marked by the establishment of a number of key American institutions that continue to operate today. Because of his central role in the founding of the US, Washington is often called the "Father of His Country." What are five places or institutions that are named after him? More...

We have been taught that General Washington was the model president.

After he finished two terms, he refused to accept another.

He was a true patriot: he wanted to set an example for future presidents.

And set an example he did.

Our 32nd president, however, decided to run four times (although he died soon after being elected for the last time).

That is why the Constitution was changed so that a president may serve only two terms.

Some people say that individuals such as Egypt's Mubarak, Zimbabwe's Mugabe, Indonesia's Sukarno, etc. would have gone down in history as great patriots if they had served a reasonable time and then passed power to others. Sadly, they -- unlike General Washington -- could not give up power.

The Chinese communists deserve credit for something: their dictator may serve for only 10 years. Then they select a new dictator. That is progress.

Some historians claim that The United States had just two TRUE presidents:

John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln. J. F. Kennedy was killed by banksters. It's an interesting link:

Washington is known as the “American Cincinnatus”
Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was a statesman and hero of the early Roman Republic. Chosen to lead when Rome was threatened by an invading army, he left his plow in the field to take command of the situation. Once Rome was safe, he gave up power and returned to his farm. Like Cincinnatus, Washington wanted to be a private citizen and farmer, but answered the call of his country. At the end of the Revolutionary War, Washington peacefully returned his commission as commander in chief of the Continental Army to Congress, thereby helping to confirm the principle of civilian control of the military.

★ Washington never occupied the White House

George Washington was the only U.S. President who did not occupy the White House, which was not completed until after his death. During his two terms as president, the U.S. Capital was located first in New York and then in Philadelphia. George Washington played a large role, however, in the development of the new Federal City that was named after him, and in overseeing the design of both the Capitol Building and the White House.

Oh, yes, every country needs more politicians like Cincinnatus.

Here in California, politicians hang on for life. They run for every office that they can. They make a career out of politics.

Democracy means that more people should be given the chance to represent the people for a short period of time and then let others have a chance.

Politicians call themselves "public servants." What a joke! It is said that most of the members of the Congress come to Washington, D.C. with modest incomes and leave as millionaries. And, of course, President Washington would be shocked if he saw how presidents are treated like kings.
