Grant's Tomb Dedicated (1897)

The remains of American Civil War general and US President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia Dent Grant, lie interred in Grant's Tomb. The granite and marble structure, designed by architect John Duncan, was completed in 1897 and dedicated on what would have been Grant's 75th birthday. Groucho Marx on You Bet Your Life used to ask non winning contestants "who's buried in Grants tomb?"

"Now" is the eternal present.

Coming up this year is the 200th anniversary of the burning of the White House (and other government buildings) by the British in 1814. General Ross and his British troops first ensured there would be no loss of life in the process. Dolly Madison, not liking the sooty burnt exterior (originally unpainted sandstone) had it painted white.

The tomb's granite exterior is modeled after the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and but for the Ionic order, resembles the Tropaeum Alpium. Within the tomb, the twin sarcophagi of Grant and his wife Julia are based on that of Napoleon Bonaparte at Les Invalides
