I guess you first have to win the bronze medal for something like the hangman, then you get the silver and then gold.

You get it for reading the articles of they day. Click on the logo of TFD by Farlex, top left corner, then on your user name, top right corner,
then you have the information under the heading "badges".

It does seem to take varying levels of effort to achieve Gold badges. Each time you execute an activity you're awared points in that activity (you can see it in your Recent Activity window on your profile). I'm not sure how many points it takes to trigger each level of badge (Bronze, Silver, Gold), but it took me maybe a week of repeat use to get Bronzes, then 3-4 weeks to get silvers, and another couple of months to get Golds. Articles, This Day in History, Birthdays, Holidays, Quotes are pretty quick to get; Hangman & Spelling Bee seem to take forever (still haven't gotten Hangman yet). Good luck!

It'd be interesting to see how many times you need to play Hangman to win it. One way to do this would be to create a hangman-exclusive account.

I've played 1000 times, and still no gold...yet. Of course, hangman can take a few seconds to play if you go with the defaults.

I haven't gotten a gold yet, but it'll be fun to see which one is first. Based on other people's profiles, the "being there" ones are easier to get unless you spend a LOT of time. I know I got the bronze quickly for hangman (it's what got me to sign up) but silver took longer and gold is taking even longer still.

I particularly enjoy the idiom section of this fine website.

You get gold badges after getting the bronze and silver badges for the topic. It will take some time, though.
