Arturo Toscanini (1867)

Internationally recognized as one of the world's great conductors, Toscanini first took the baton as a substitute conductor in Brazil. Toscanini's artistry is preserved in recordings, notably of the symphonies of Beethoven and works by Brahms, Wagner, Verdi, and others. A tempestuous personality greatly respected by his performers, he also served as musical director of La Scala, Milan, and of the Metropolitan Opera, New York City. Wow. He was supposed to board the doomed Lusitania. At least we got to enjoy him for a little longer.

Arturo Toscanini led an extraordinary life. Though he run for office in Milano under the Fascist flag, he despised Mussolini,
Unfortunately, the article didn't give any details about the reason why. He was anti Nazi to the point where he refused a famous opera singer,Kirsten Flagstad, the chance to sing in an Wagnerian opera in New York City under his baton. He brought to the world Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, piece I am especially stirred by.
