Lon Nol Ousts Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia (1970)

Nol became defense minister and army chief of staff in Norodom Sihanouk's Cambodian government in 1955 and later served as premier under him. In 1970, he led the coup that deposed Sihanouk and assumed control of the government. His unsuccessful attempts at suppressing the Communist Khmer Rouge guerillas plunged the country into civil war, and he fled the country in 1975 with the Communist takeover imminent. Lon Nol was increasingly dependent on the advice of soothsayers and Buddhist mystics: at one point during a Khmer Rouge assault on Phnom Penh, he sprinkled a circular line of consecrated sand in order to defend the city. Finally, on April 1, he resigned and fled the country into exile, as his name was the first of a blacklist of people the Khmer Rouge had vowed to execute.

Very interesting piece of human interest, Curmudgeonine. Obviously none of the soothsayers or magical behavior protected him. Later, Sihanouk claimed that the 1970 coup against him was the result of an alliance between his longstanding enemy, exiled politician Son Ngoc Thanh and Sirik Matak, with CIA support and planning. Why is the US involved in so many coups. Aren't we the country of business or are we all about intrigue? Is everything a big game for the select few?
