Blood Test Predicts Alzheimer's

If you could find out today whether or not Alzheimer's disease is in your future, would you want to? Scientists in the US have developed a blood test that they say can predict with 90 percent accuracy an individual's risk of developing Alzheimer's within the next few years. The test looks at the levels of 10 lipids in the blood that appear to be predictive of future cognitive decline. It is unclear why these lipid levels act as an indicator, but one theory is that early changes in the brain affect these circulating fats. Experts are now in the process of confirming and refining these findings. More...

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is, as we often hear, a public health problem of epidemic proportions. It is the fifth leading cause of death in Americans aged 65 and older. More than five million Americans are already affected

I would take the blood test. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. I was in a nursing home late last night visiting a friend when I heard a man down the hall cry out: "Help, help, hurry, Mom, Dad, please, I'm in a heck of a jam here. Ken, Ken, come help me, help me. Don't let me die here." The voice was so plaintive and desparate that my heart went out to him. When the nurse came in I asked about the screaming man."He has Alzheimer's disease and this goes on through out the night." Our future, possibly? who knows what the future holds.
