The 228 Massacre (1947)

Following Japan's defeat in World War II, Taiwan was placed under the administrative control of the Republic of China. The transition did not go smoothly. The Taiwanese had been content under Japanese rule and quickly grew to resent the heavy-handed tactics of the Kuomintang. On February 27, 1947, a dispute between a cigarette vendor and authorities escalated the next day into an anti-government uprising that was violently suppressed. How many Taiwanese are thought to have been massacred? More...

I have read that many people in Taiwan want neither the (so-called) Communists on the mainland nor the Nationalists (Kuomintang) to rule them. They would like an independent Republic of Taiwan.

As the older people who came over from the mainland during the Revolution die off, the younger people may start considering themselves more Taiwanese than Chinese.

I hope that the United States continues to protect Taiwan.

The United States is Taiwan's only defense against an attack from the mainland.

Some people say bad things about the United States, but many countries (not only Taiwan!) have only one true friend: The United States of America.

Estimates of the number of deaths vary from 10,000 to 30,000 or more.[

What kind of government would kill so many of it citizens, especially when the citizens are objecting to governmental corruption?

Many governments would and do.

We are seeing this in the Ukraine, Syria, Egypt, Venezuela, etc.

And, of course, history is full of examples.

Leaders do not want to give up power. Power makes them somebodies. They will klll in order to keep power.

Without power, they are just nobodies -- like me.
