Paul Warfield Tibbets, Jr. (1915)

A US Air Force colonel during World War II, Tibbets is best known for piloting the Enola Gay—named for his mother—on August 6, 1945, when it dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb, code-named Little Boy, was the first atomic weapon deployed in the history of warfare and killed tens of thousands of people. In the 2005 BBC premier, Hiroshima: BBC History of World War II, Tibbets recalls the day of the Hiroshima bombing. When the bomb had hit its target, he was relieved. Tibbets stressed in the interview, "I'm not emotional. I didn't have the first Goddamned thought, or I would have told you what it was. I did the job and I was so relieved that it was successful, you can't even understand it."

Can you blame the child who finds the gun and shots his sister not knowing what a gun is capable of? Conversely, can you blame the pilot who drops the bomb, a weapon available for use and additionally used during a war where the Japanese were so brutal to prisoners of war that Tibbets' staff had twelve cyanide tablets in the event of being shot down and taken by the Japanese? I think we, as a nation, should take Isaiah's advice: 'turn our swords into plow shears' because if the sword is available, it will be used.
