It would be easy to stand at the top of a ditch and hold a man down in it with a long pole. So this must be some kind of metaphor. Who can explain, please?

Justice must be seen to be donuts.

Doing evil to those who harmed you, is to become as bad as him.

I don't think so Guto, there are many different degrees of harm as well as evil, and not understanding the difference between right and wrong often gets men in a lot of trouble, all because of mistaking right and wrong (which has everything to do with knowing when we tell lies or the truth which is closely correlated to being able to discern love from hate, which is something that every person in the world knows how to do)

It sounds more like he is speaking of not allowing a person who has made a mistake, do the next right thing. And if thats what he is talking about, then he fails to realize in many cases, the person who is holding another down in the ditch, is committing a far worse crime than the person whose bad was falling into the ditch.

To be concerned of the fate of the world is not bad, but bearing false witness is to not be

A clear example of this is North Korea, you can't have your people in a ditch, without being in the same ditch. It can work literally and up to a scale where the powerful end up sharing the same destiny as those oppressed.

One cannot take too much from person living in the ditch. There must be more subtle and effective ways of exploitation of human nature.

I really didn't understand why he said that!

He made many things! academic, agricultural, and industrial school for African Americans !

His legacy is memorable!

Dictators have got a way of being down in the hole with their victim but still out of it contemporaneously. I was there with Mugabe, Banda and Seseko Mobutu!

That's why the smartest, most crafty evil people seize control of the monetary system and the schooling system to pay other people who have been indoctrinated to hold down the people in the ditch.

It is elementary.

The best way to control the opposition is to finance it. Birds of prey have two wings; the left wing & right wing.

Absolutely! Simply observe what the international banking cartel does since they've seized private control over the public monetary system. Endless war, create inextinguishable debt money from nothing, promote division (class, religious, racial, it is all good!), use one group as a pretext to bankrupt a larger group, promote democracy (literally, mob rule) over the Republic, siphon off massive amounts of money through usury, wield government to eliminate competition and enshrine your own corporate monopolies, etc...

The inference is that both men are lower in their standing when one man holds another down (in the ditch).
Booker T. Washington speaks about holding someone down in slavery; the act of holding thus degrades the owner as much as the slave.

To hold is to have or to keep something in a grasp, according to Merriam Webster, and also "To have possession or ownership of or have at one's disposal".

The quotation made its way into an anthology, "The Great Quotations", with a slightly different--perhaps better-- wording:

"You can't hold a man down without staying down with him."
As quoted in The Great Quotations (1971) edited by George Seldes, p. 641

As an alternative to that:

"There is no escape — man drags man down, or man lifts man up."
As quoted in The Great Quotations (1971) edited by George Seldes, p. 366

And finally: You can't keep a good man/woman down!
