It is perfectly true. That is why we say 'Man is known by the company he keeps'.

Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing.

Reminds me of a few biz partners I had in the past. Bad memories. Strong lessons.

How true it is, surround yourself with those who add value to your life and not those that take away from it. I was at a Rotary meeting recently and a young lady who was receiving "our" high school student of the month award said something profound. She stated that there are "two types of people in the world, givers and there are takers." Then she asked our group, "what do you want to be in the world? ". I think one will be much more successful if we are givers...

Guilt by association may be unfair, but it is how one is judged regardless of guilt or innocence.

Some people in the forum really miss the point Aesop has made with the statement "Evil companions bring more hurt than profit." Some people in the forum use some kind of stereotypical pre-judgement formulas of "you are who you are with" which is not true anyway... but Aesop isn't saying that at all. He simply says that if you become a friend, a companion or even a partner of a person or group of people who have or eventually develop evil, negative tendencies, they bring you more hurt than profit.

The suggestion that can be extracted from this observation is that if one wants to avoid being hurt by people, one preferably avoids people with negative, destructive, evil tendencies.

One can make a real life example: a long-term alcoholic who does not acknowledge his illness - alcoholism, addiction, which is ruining his own health and changes his personality, behaviour to potentially an aggressive, violent father, husband, that brings suffering to his wife and children...

People can change only if they choose to, after they truly, honestly acknowledge their own negative trends, actions...after they realize the consequences of their actions, after they shed the veil of ignorance and delusion and see clearly. One could talk about the concept of "karma" - cause and effect. In the case of the alcoholic one of the successful ways to stop the negative tendencies is to search medical health treatment...

But they bring profit, and that explains the world.

Make every post as if it was the first one in the thread.

Observe how a person treats others whom offer him or her no benefit and you see the reflection of their true value system.

The wise will base their decision to remain friends with such a person on the results of those observations.

Good or evil? No, the dilemma would be amusing or boring.

This moral from Aesop's fables: "The Sick Stag" is actually about takers. http://www.taleswithmorals.com/the-sick-stag.htm

"A sick Stag lay down in a quiet corner of his pasture-ground. His companions came in great numbers to inquire after his health, and each one helped himself to a share of the food which had been placed for his use; so that he died, not from his sickness, but from the failure of the means of living."

Takers always prey upon the givers of this world. And this is always a tragic and painful lesson to learn. One of things that make it so difficult to see people for what they really are, is that we all wear masks of goodness. Usually, a user is a con artist, who not only preys upon the givers, but the trusting who are innocent and nieve, the broken and the bruised, and those they have seduced into loving them, and who see them through the lens of love, and cannnot believe, until too late, the black hole that the person is. Takers always prey upon the kindness, generousity, and good will of others.
