The industrious, hard-working Chinese have raised the envy of people in many oountries, including Indonesia, where many Chinese were killed in similar riots.

Here in California, there were laws against Chinese ownership of land, and there was great agitation against the Chinese in cities such as San Francisco.

Today, the mayor of San Francisco is a Chinese. And American businesses are all falling over one another in order to get the lucrative business of Chinese tourists.

The bigots of yesteryear must be turning over in their graves.

Following the incident, what was instituted as a way to foster Malaysian unity?

Immediately after the riot, the government assumed emergency powers and suspended Parliament, which would reconvene again only in 1971. It also suspended the press and established a National Operations Council.
