The Diamond Sutra

The Diamond Sutra is a Buddhist wisdom text. Written in the form of a dialogue between the Buddha Gautama and a questioning disciple, it emphasizes the fleeting nature of the material world and posits that enlightenment cannot be achieved through rational thought. A wood block-printed copy of the sutra held at the British Library is the earliest known printed text with a date—868 CE—predating the Gutenberg Bible by about 587 years. "All composed things are like a dream,
a phantom, a drop of dew, a flash of lightning."
--- --- ---

Clearly, I remember reading this when I was 19, maybe 18, and I was shocked at the mere second I finished reading it.
The first time I read it, it sounded differently, perhaps because it was manipulated to fit into English rhyme.
But many years later, I still meditate on the meaning of this words and find them as true as they are beautifully serene.

Life is just a dream, isn't it?
everything is connected and everything is intangible as our own thoughts.

"So you should view this fleeting world
a star at dawn, a bubble in a stream,
a flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
a flickering lamp, a phantom and a dream."

While living, be a dead man
Be thoroughly dead.
And do as you like,
And all is well.

was the one that hooked me in high school (not from the Diamond Sutra, but along those Zennish lines...)
