Perhaps it means people must follow what they believe in or principles which leads them to show who they are. It is annoying to do such thing such as irrelevant ethics forcing to hide oneself.
People don't need to choose to be a better person but they need to be themselves
"nature means own qualities or or own identity".

Conservatives would say Emily is being stubborn, unsubmissive. Independent thinkers would say, "You go, girl!" Without context for this quote and specific background on why Emily chose these words, I can't take a stand. I like independent thinkers, though. They make all of us think with their stirring.

Au contraire. Many conservatives would agree with her statement- to a point. One can have faith and still have boundless choices. In fact, I doubt if very many would take her words full face without a caveat. What if one's natural path leads them down the road with Hannibal Lecter?

or I'll walk where my own nature would be leading: It vexes me to be forced another guide.

Quote:I'll walk where my own nature would be leading: It vexes me to choose another guide. This is an interesting quote. I would, however, take issue with the suggestion that what she was saying might be interpreted as a kind of "just be yourself" sort of advice. Rather, I think she's talking about not being led or directed; that being led cancels or opposes her sense of self.
