"Engrossing" also had a now obsolete legal sense according to Blackstone's Commentaries.

engrossing - the getting into one’s possession, or buying up, large quantities of corn, or other dead victuals, with intent to sell them again. This must of course be injurious to the public, by putting it in the power of one or two rich men to raise the price of provisions at their own discretion.
(Emphasis added)

"Engrossing, forestalling and regrating were marketing offences in English common law. The terms were used to describe unacceptable methods of influencing the market, sometimes by creating a local monopoly for a certain good, usually food."

Although the word "engrossing" is obsolete, the concept of "cornering the market" and the legal penalties against it live on.

"In 1989 in a settlement with the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Nelson Bunker Hunt (a billionaire) was fined US$10 million and banned from trading in the commodity markets as a result of civil charges of conspiring to manipulate the silver market stemming from his attempt to corner the market in silver.[1] This fine was in addition to a multimillion-dollar settlement to pay back taxes, fines and interest to the Internal Revenue Service for the same period.[1]"

You might say Hunt's behavior was "gross." (Ouch!)
