First Case of Person-to-Person H7N9 Transmission

In February, the H7N9 strain of bird flu was first detected in humans. Since then, at least 133 people in China and Taiwan have been infected with the virus, and 43 have died as a result. Until now, concerns over a possible pandemic have remained relatively low, since all of the cases appeared to have been transmitted via contact with infected poultry. However, researchers now believe that a 32-year-old woman who died in April contracted the illness from her father, marking the first known instance of person-to-person transmission of this virus. The virus is still unable to pass efficiently between people, so the pandemic risk, though higher than before, remains low. More...
