Man is a rope stretched between the animal and the Superman—a rope over an abyss ... What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal.

The opening lines of Speak Memory, Vladimir Nabokov's brilliant autobiography, echo Nietzsche's language:

“The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness. Although the two are identical twins, man, as a rule, views the prenatal abyss with more calm than the one he is heading for (at some forty-five hundred heartbeats an hour)."

Mere coincidence, or memory's alchemy?

I do think that people are vainly afraid to die without thinking that
it is that same nothingness whence they came that they are going to.

Is not death only the origin of life as the void is the origin of existence?

Man is a rope stretched between the animal and the Superman—a rope over an abyss ... What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal.

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900)[/quote]

The excerpts are from "Thus Spake Zarathustra", Prologue, Chapter 4.

In Chapter 3,: "When Zarathustra arrived at the nearest town which adjoineth the forest, he found many people assembled in the market-place; for it had been announced that a rope-dancer would give a performance. And Zarathustra spake thus unto the people:
I teach you the Superman. Man is something that is to be surpassed. What have ye done to surpass man?"

In Chapter 4 : "Man is a rope stretched between the animal and the Superman- a rope over an abyss.

A dangerous crossing, a dangerous wayfaring, a dangerous looking-back, a dangerous trembling and halting.

What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal: what is lovable in man is that he is an over-going and a down-going.

I love those that know not how to live except as down-goers, for they are the over-goers."

How "spake" the town's people? Thus: ""We have now heard enough of the rope-dancer; it is time now for us to see him!" And all the people laughed at Zarathustra.
