It is just at the very age when a man's character is forming that he tumbles into love, and then the lass he loves has the making or marring of him. Unconsciously he molds himself to what she would have him, good or bad.

Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927)

The quotation is from ON BEING IN LOVE, an essay from the humorous collection entitled Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow:

We want to think of women not--as their own sex would show them--as
Lorleis luring us to destruction, but as good angels beckoning us
upward. They have more power for good or evil than they dream of. It
is just at the very age when a man's character is forming that he
tumbles into love, and then the lass he loves has the making or
marring of him. Unconsciously he molds himself to what she would have
him, good or bad
. I am sorry to have to be ungallant enough to say
that I do not think they always use their influence for the best. Too
often the female world is bounded hard and fast within the limits of
the commonplace. Their ideal hero is a prince of littleness, and to
become that many a powerful mind, enchanted by love, is "lost to life
and use and name and fame."

The ladies had their revenge on Jerome: "Lazy Thoughts of a Lazy Girl, a book by the pseudonymous 'Jenny Wren', was published in 1891. The actual author is still anonymous. The book has the same form as Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, but is from the point of view of a woman." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idle_Thoughts_of_an_Idle_Fellow) The counterpart to ON BEING IN LOVE from Lazy Thoughts is a hoot. Here is an excerpt to give you a flavor:

"One never hears that Adam fell in love with Eve, or that Eve was passionately attached to Adam. But then, poor things, they had so little choice—it was either that or nothing. Besides, there was no opposition to the match, so it was bound to be rather a tame affair. For my part, I pity Eve, for Adam was, I think, the very meanest of men. When he was turned out of the garden, what a wretch he must have felt himself! and how he must have taunted his poor wife! Weak men are always bullies."

It's funny how differently women and men think about their sex opposites:

for example male author thinks
"women's ideal hero is a prince of littleness,.."
whereas female writer reckons
"Weak men are always bullies."

It is a shame that such a ambiguous references like i.e. prince of littleness and/or weak men have always been shrouded in mystery.

De omnibus dubitandum est.

Gotta go with Chrstine here: what a lot of Victorian claptrap. Women are women, men are men - there's good ones and bad ones and lot of in-between ones. Neither gender possesses a collective thought or way at looking at life that is common to all of their gender.

Another one of Daemon's attempts to get a gender war flourishing? He does so seem to love doing that. Or perhaps he is an old, old, white guy who lives in another age and mourns its passing?
