In line for the English throne, he infuriated Queen Elizabeth by marrying Mary Queen of Scots. He then alienated Mary by accusing her of infidelity and stabbing her secretary to death in front of her. Mary distanced herself from him, and shortly thereafter, his house exploded. alienating your wife by stabbing someone to death in front of her. Understatement? I think of him as some creepy bogeyman trying to control and profit from events that were ultimately doomed and beyond his control.
but maybe he was just a really nasty piece of work!
