His most famous work is a collection of satiric definitions, The Devil's Dictionary (first published as The Cynic's Word Book in 1906). In 1913 he set out for Mexico and was never seen again. Rumors of his fate include a suicide in the Grand Canyon, getting shot by Pancho Villa and death by pneumonia
does anyone know what really happened to him ??
I live in my own little world, but it's OK - they know me here...

Good question about his fate.
Most things I've seen from his "dictionary" are pretty grim. Maybe he became so depressed by it that he let his cigar go out and just couldn't go on.

hi everyone, funny, I had been thinking about whatever happened to him also. curiosity I guess.
The Devils Dictionary (1911) By Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842-1813) missing aged 71
Friendless, adj. Having no favours to bestow. Destitute of fortune. Addicted to utterance of truth common sense.
Friendship, n. A ship big enough to carry two in fair weather, but only one in foul.
Ambrose Bierce 1842–1914?, American, The Devils Dictionary, distinguished Civil War service. Apparently disillusionment and sadness pervaded in the latter part of his life. In 1913 he went to Mexico, where all trace of him was lost.
I can only speculate on his fate, but I would take a wild guess and say possibly the San Francisco bridge Sanrio. Why?. Because of many things firstly he had been a brave man (Distinguished Civil War service) you know shell shock, carnage etc...perhaps disillusionment and sadness had prevailed (unfortunate family matters!!!) in the latter part of his life contributed. Dangerous game going into a war zone aged 71 as EL Paso Mexico was in the throes of revolution. If he went missing in 1913 he would have been well aware of the number 13. So when I look at friendless/friends (TDD) he is right fair weather two, foul weather one. Ok maybe not enough to go on, more research needed. Himself being a man familiar with the Bible after reading some of the TDD. May God rest his Soul in peace whatever may have been his fate.
Two. He just went to Mexico to start a new life. Which would not have been uncommon.
Thankyou Daemon for introducing Ambrose Bierce, I am liking him a little more now that I have an understanding of him. An intelligent man in his day no doubt. Handsome to by the looks of things.
