A press release from Wikimedia Foundation (the non-profit organization that brings you among others eleven years old Wikipedia) and company called Orange (not to be confused with Apple) provide data access in Africa and Middle East. If you like you can read more.... New '* for oil' project perhaps. Give a man a fish you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime - Chinese proverb

Thanks for posting this. The advent of cell phones in underdeveloped, relatively isolated areas has probably been one of the biggest steps in development. It has given people access to the rest of the world.
It seems to me that this project, which allows people with, perhaps, little to no access to libraries or the internet to now start to join the 21st century. Cell phones provided access to people; this provides (the start of) access to information.
I actually Google-searched Orange telecom and looked over their UK web site. Wish they were in the U.S., especially now T-Mobile is trying to pull out.

Great job! It's a big CHARITY by Orange. You seldom expect such silent generosity from a profit based organisation. It's the area which once was known for producing technology of it's time and was a knowledge base society. The west had been enlightened by the scholars who were based from the region. The partnership by Orange and Wikimedia in the region is a little return for the good, sooner or later.
There are intriguing places for oil to explore other than this part of the world. Stay optimistic.
