I guess that not only Japanese baseball fans but almost all Japanese people never thought about what his name mean.

His name is ダルビッシュ 有 in Japanese and it is pronounced [darubishu juː].

That's strange, I heard nothing on the news about the Rangers hiring any Japanese players!

Could you, please, tell me what dervish is in Japanese :) Thanks!

有(his first name)'s mother is Japanese, and his father is Iranian(though acquired Japanese nationality after marriage).

So ダルビッシュ was taken from his father's name(Darvishsefad).

* Katakana(Japanese syllabary) is used to represent foreign words or foreign-loan words.

Cheers!

I also hope for his sake he can live up to the hype. Remember when DiceK first came here?

Indeed, otherwise he's gonna be bombarded with criticism by Texans.

However I have a good feeling about him, and and I have good instinct.

It's still a spring training, but it's fun to watch him pitch.

Darvish is expected to throw six innings or about 90 pitches against Colorado in a game that starts at 9:05 p.m. CDT.(11:05 a.m. in Japan)

Ichiro, on the other hand, has nothing to prove. One of the all-time greats.

I think Ichiro got liberated from the spell of Mariners.
