Hi all, good friends old and new,

My question is: have any of you had any sightings, experiences, or even interaction, with creatures supposed to inhabit only the world of myth and superstition?
I am currently (trying) to write a novel about a particular creature called a manananggal, which is 'found' in the Far East. It is a predatory half woman, half bird, and I have reason to believe I am being pursued by one.

Serious replies please. You can contact me with a PM if you prefer.

Is this your pursuer?

Ding dong what are you on, what’s wrong? Go to the market and buy a barrow load of garlic.

I myself am being pursued by a strange creature, which follows my every word,

dissecting my every sentence. I hope he Will give up and move to pastures new.

Serious replies to a crazy idea?

I knew a woman to whom others applied a similar description. I sorta liked her anyway, she was a joy and jewel so to speak, and steered me in the right direction, albeit in a bullish way and sorta sordid manner. Harpies are like that, when they aren't scheming and conspiring to help you they're plotting to feast upon your entrails.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpy

Are they a form of angel in disguise? or angles in da skies?

The older I get, the more I realise there is more to life than that I can perceive through my human senses.
Maybe 'crazy' is believing all you see is all there is?

Tangents to curvilinear form are just another perspective in space and time from some other point of reference...

A small (but pedantic) point: If it can be demonstrated that a person has had such an experience, the myth in question would cease to be a myth.

You'd need to pin a firmer definition on "sightings, experiences, or even interaction" to get any meaningful answer. Many things may 'seem' very real to certain individuals, but it doesn't follow that these 'things' have any basis in reality.

One man's reality is another man's 'crazy'.

Arguing with a creationist is like playing chess with a pigeon. It'll knock over the pieces, crap on the board, and fly back to it's flock to claim victory.

Thank you for that, Will. I stand corrected, and will be more specific in future because ambiguity is abhorrent.
However, for now, my initial post will just have to suffice.

I know there is more than perceiving through my senses!

Maybe your experience was a dream.

I don't believe in manananggal but I believe there are evil spirits. If you had an encounter with one (manananggal), I'd like to know about the experience if you don't mind sharing. I've heard a lot about 'white lady', 'nuno sa punso', and doppelganger from people I know or people IRL (in real life), but never about 'manananggal' as far as I remember - I've only read about it or have only seen it in movies.

That is just awful. Worse than being pursued by a manananggal.

Greek mythology's ultimate pursuer, seductress and heart-breaker: Mnemosyne (Memory)

.....

Where she resides, she taunts, delights, regales and sometimes destroys us. When she departs, neither the words nor music she taught us can fill the void she leaves behind.

While recently making arrangements for a new office and residence in Singapore,
our newly retained manservant had a wife who was deathly fearful of such a creature.
So I had to brief myself as to such things. Sadly there was no way I could relieve such fear.

On one of my vacations in Ireland I thought I saw a leprechaun, but there were two logical explanations

1. I was drunk
2. My glasses were dirty

No, 1 and 2 were by no means related. Mere coincidence.

Cool, Gabh, Nollaig Shona. The first word reminds me of French 'noel', the second of German 'schön' or Flemish 'schoon' (beautiful).

In Italan one of the expressions I like is 'buone feste' (happy holidays).

One of the ancient pagan Finnish evil spirits is Näkki, a Troll-like creature living in the waters and lurking under the bridges or piers to catch small children or elder incautious people.

An even more dangerous (and bigger) evil creature is Iku-Turso, drawn here by Don Rosa:

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Thank you all for your contributions. The thread is still open, and I'm hoping that members from East Asia can chip in with their experiences.

Such a creature, of course, lives only in one's imagination. It is no less real for that, but only to the one who imagines it. I read somewhere that it stems from feelings of loneliness or as a result of neglect in childhood. Its value to its 'host' is that it is unique to him, or her - no one has exactly the same creature - and it can be to you whatever you want to tell others you have seen. It will pursue you for as long as you want it to, for as long as you have a need for it, and it will cease to exist in your imagination just as soon as your mind is focussed on the realities of life. Like writing the book.
