"Universally acknowledged" are very strong words, for any subject matter.

Off to Singapore for a spell!

Jane Austen (1775-1817)

Pride and Prejudice, was Jane Austins second novel. She originally entitled her second novel, First Impression. The above quote are the first words from the novel.

Chapter 1

IT is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.

Pride and Prejudice--1813.

...operating assumption of a gold digger.

By the way, I understand the Bronte
sisters are giving Jane Austen a run for her money with new film versions of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Has anyone seen them? Have they even been released? The lachrymose beware!

I've seen the new Jane Eyre movie. It was okay. Not my favorite version by far. I like the 2006 BBC miniseries version best. I will say, though, that the new movie has one of the most beautiful musical scores I've heard in years, composed by Dario Marianelli. I listen to it practically every day.

I don't think the new Wuthering Heights is out yet. I know that Mumford & Sons are composing some music for that one.
