Arthur Adolph "Harpo" Marx (1888)

Harpo was a member of the American comedy team known as the Marx Brothers. The brothers enjoyed success in vaudeville, on Broadway, and in motion pictures from the early 1900s to about 1950. Harpo never spoke during their performances and instead blew a horn, whistled, or mimed to communicate. He also got laughs with his prop-laden sight gags, many of which involved the seemingly infinite number of odd items he managed to produce from his topcoat's oversized pockets. How did he get his nickname? More...

I don't know where to begin. Any accurate description of the man sounds like an incredible eulogy.

There are archived recordings of his voice. The reason he stopped speaking "in character" was entirely because his voice was too good to be funny, and he humbly and wisely recognized this.

No one is perfect, yet there have been very few persons who have combined achievement, humility, dignity, and decency in one life the way that Arthur Adolph "Harpo" Marx did.

went looking for a photo of Harpo in classic kleptomaniac mode, but found this instead:

frankly Harpo of the bulging eyes would be the only one I would recognise.

Really funny films, amazingly managing to include piano and harp solos! All funny in their own ways (except poor Zeppo) but I always had a soft spot for Harpo.

A very appealing vision of a life lived with with total anarchy, irresponsibility, mischief and beautiful music! Something to aspire to! Applause Applause

and from all accounts, a really really nice, great guy Applause Applause

Happy birthday, Harpo, and thank you.

you start life with a totally innocuous name, end up a Marx in red-paranoid America and a Jew named Adolf. Guess he knew life could be strange!

And took the trouble to let others know, too. Really funny.
