West Point Opens (1802)

West Point, New York, was the site of a military post established by George Washington in 1778. In 1802, Thomas Jefferson signed legislation establishing the United States Military Academy there. Initially, civil engineering was the foundation of the Academy's curriculum, which broadened after the Civil War. I had no idea West Point started the tradition of class rings. I would have imagined that the tradition was older, dating back to before 1835.
