Douglas Hyde Elected First President of Ireland (1938)Hyde was an Irish scholar and political leader. He was largely responsible for the revival of Irish language and literature through his founding of the Gaelic League in 1893. Gaelic seems like a beautiful language, but I can't ever figure out how to pronounce Gaelic words when I see them. Are there any hard and fast rules about Gaelic that would be helpful to me?

I wasn't at all familiar with the Gaelic language until I studied abroad in Dublin. Many of the street signs had words in both English and Gaelic. I was surprised to see just how different the two languages are. I expected there to be some cognitive similarities between words, but there didn't seem to be very many, if any at all. You're right though, it does seem like a beautiful language.
