What do you mean by literature works? You mean English literature? Just google and you'll find more than what you may perhaps lay your hands on? Good Luck!Applause

You can start with these pages:

Farlex Freelibrary
The Literature Network

There are myriads of other sites to find with search engines.

Cokuan, I would also suggest you to look in your local libraries. This will get you touch and feel of the books as well. All the best!

P.S.: Considering that you are in China, I am not sure how much of web you can access. Still, all the best!

One place for literary works in public domain is Project Gutenberg.

Some libraries offer digital collections. One such library is the US Library of Congress.

Google offers literature at Google Books.

Booksellers such as Amazon, and Barnes and Noble, offer published books and literature as downloads for purchase. Some formats require software for your PC or smartphone if you have one.

Yeah, exactly. No telling what China chooses to censor.

Do what srirr suggested -otherwise, stretch out as far as you may. Good luck.

In Japan people leave books in the streets for other passers-by to read.

cokuan (and I) can indeed download books here. The problem isn't that - it's the library thing. Public libraries in China are few and far between and only stock Chinese books. Bookstores proliferate but, again, don't carry books in English.

Cokuan - don't know where you are in China but in places like Shanghai, Beijing, Xian, Hangzhou etc. there are some bookstores which carry some English literature. Mostly Dickens, Austen and Shakespeare. You can do an internet Search for them and ask for lists of English books they carry and they will send them to you.

A good tip, if you are in a city, is to find out where traveler's Hostels are (Note: NOT 'Hotels' but "HoStels".) These are place where International travelers stay and they all have a shelf or two of English books that have been left behind for us poor, Literature-starved readers. You can sit there and read them or ask if you can buy one.To find one of these places go on-line (Yahoo or Google, not Chinese search engines) and type in "Hostels in....(whatever the name of your city is).." for directions. Hostels are great; they usually give a very cheap price. Some Foreigner Pubs also have the same facility.

English schools such as EF and Wall Street sometimes have some English books too and, if you ask nicely, the Foreign teachers will be only too glad to lend them out (though be sure to return them)as the majority of students don't use this resource.

You can also go on-line to an ESL site and ask the same question as you have asked here (Though I should phrase it simply "Can anyone help me to get hold of some novels or Classics written in English?"

Hope this helps.

weddingcoo - the lack of books in English has nothing whatsoever to do with censorship: - it is simply the natural consequence of living in a country of 1.6 billion people whose mother-tongue is not English.

We had a recent discussion here on TFD about the fact that America - alone of the industrialised nations -censors books such as Tom Sawyer etc. THOSE books are available in China.

((ps I'm sorry if that comes off a little grumpily - but I really think that, if we are going to criticise one nation over another, it's always a good idea to make sure our own walls are made of solid brick and not of glass.)

Here is a link to a legitimate collection of works in the public domain:
http://www.archive.org/

It includes text, audio files, graphics, and video in English and a number of other languages.
