We were crawling along the narrow wooden lattice of the bridge.

What's a "narrow wooden lattice" of a bridge?

It seems an odd thing to do (unless the walkway of the bridge had been destroyed) but it seems that they were crawling along the top of the "fence" on one side of the bridge.
