He was the last surviving person documented as born in 1882 and was the only Nordic person to have lived past their 113th birthday. Mortensen also was the oldest supercentenarian who emigrated until his age was surpassed by Italian emigrant to the USA, Dina Manfredini.

On his 115th birthday Mortensen gave his advice for a long life: "Friends, a good cigar, drinking lots of good water, no alcohol, staying positive and lots of singing will keep you alive for a long time." This tells me living and living long is nothing but for the grace of God!
