Which of them is correct:

1) He was on his way, and "wondering" what was in the sack given to him by the man, he opened it.

2) He was on his way, and "having wondered" what was in the sack given to him by the man, he opened it.

3) He was on his way, and "having been wondered" what was in the sack given to him by the man, he opened it.

Sentence (2) is correct...just remove the quote marks...I’m assuming they are there to distinguish the words in question only.

I think these are best:

1) He was on his way and, wondering what was in the sack given to him by the man, he opened it.

2) He was on his way and, having wondered what was in the sack given to him by the man, he opened it.
