The group was accused of introversion, turning their backs on society and its problems to develop their own interests.

Natural?

I hope not. The sentence demonstrates a misunderstanding of introversion. You need to correct that, first.

What about "being introvert"?

It is a personal trait, not a group dynamic.

A person is introverted.

A group is inward-looking, isolationist or just anti-social
(edit - not ant-social. That brings up a completely different image!Whistle )

('Isolationist' is usually a political ideology, but can be just separation from society.

Introversion
Quote:
noun
the quality of being shy and reticent.
"the tongue-tied introversion of the self-conscious artist"
PSYCHOLOGY
the tendency to be concerned with one's own thoughts and feelings rather than with external things.
"we expected our sample to show elevated neuroticism and introversion"

I disagree with it meaning shyness. Not the same thing.

I agree, Thar.

Additionally, introversion can be a pathology; shyness is behavioural.
