From Middle English tiding, tidinge (also tidinde, tidende, etc.), from Late Old English tīdung, from tīdan (“to befall; happen”), probably with assimilation to -ing.[1]
Either from or influenced by Old Norse tíðindi[2] ( > Danish/Norwegian tidende).
Cognate with Dutch tijding, German Zeitung.
