St. John's Eve (Denmark)

Known in Denmark as Sankt Hans Aften, St. John's Eve occurs near the longest day of the year and therefore is an occasion for national rejoicing. Huge bonfires light up the night sky for miles around. Along the coast, fires are built on the beach or shore. People go out in their boats to watch them burn and to sing romantic songs. Sometimes there are speeches, singing games, dances, and fireworks as well. Midsummer Eve is also a popular time for Danes to leave their year-round homes and go to vacation cottages on the coast. It is not the longest day - that has passed, on the 21st this year as is most common, but it can vary because the calendar does not quite match the orbit of the Earth. The longest day, with the most hours of sunlight - the Summer Solstice

24th is midsummer's day (St John's Day). The Eve is on 23rd.

That is different. They are linked, but not the same.

The birth of Jesus was linked to Jule (Christmas, 24 Dec), slightly displaced from the winter solstice (21 Dec)

The birth of John the Baptist was linked to Midsummer (24 June) which is slightly after the summer solstice (21 June)

Edited since I decided to post the article in the culture thread
