The image and announcement.

Other links at the site explain how this was done. A truly amazing accomplishment.

It is beautiful, the work involved and the picture. The science behind this is breathtaking.

It even made the front page

Uhum, maybe not.

Sorry, I know it is irrelevant to the thread, but I couldn't resist.

6.5 BILLION times bigger than our sun. That's a thousand million (1,000,000,000) times 6 and a half. Numbers too big to even fathom.

It must be big to have all our left foot socks, pens, umbrellas, gloves left in trains and trams, spectacles, and all the network prints.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

You have socks that are specific to your left foot?

I saw that issue of Metro, thar.
A total misuse of an incredible image.

Besides the almost-unimaginable mass, the time and distance are mind-boggling, too.
The light which made up the picture started its journey fifty-five million years ago . . .

I don't know about the rest of the items, JJ, but all socks, right or left :), go to sock heaven!

I know what you mean Drag0 the numbers in astronomy tend to lead to every synapse open mental states. So here's a question, (if it can even be one), related to yours.
How long has the light that was caught by the black hole at the same time as the light we see been falling into the black hole?

I like Andrew Chael's response.

“So while I appreciate the congratulations on a result that I worked hard on for years,” he added, “if you are congratulating me because you have a sexist vendetta against Katie, please go away and reconsider your priorities in life. Otherwise, stick around — I hope to start tweeting more about black holes and other subjects I am passionate about — including space, being a gay astronomer, Ursula K. Le Guin, architecture, and musicals. Thanks for following me, and let me know if you have any questions about the EHT!”
