Because the e is in the name - Shakespeare.
No reason to drop the e and insert an i when the sound is the same.
Shakespeare, Shakespearean. Singapore, Singaporean.

No e, no -ean
Wagner, Wagnerian.

What about Elizabethan?

Why is it not "ian"?

Because "Elizabeth" doesn't end with an "e".

EDIT: I cut this out but it IS relevent: -

"an" is the prefix given to historical eras. Elizabethan, Victorian, etc. But the eras until the death of George IV, become "Georgian" because of that "e". (To write it as Georgean brings up difficulties on how it's pronounced.)

In that case it would be Elizabethean.

Why isn't it "Elizabethian" now that it doesn't end in "e"?
