Hello!

I have a question about "as well" meaning "also". Can "as well" in this sense apply to things that are not "good"?

For example, does the sentence below sound alright? -

One of the wounded died soon after being brought to the hospital, and his friend died as well, only a few days later.

Somehow "as well" doesn't sound quite right to me when talking about people dying, but maybe I am misled by wrong parallels here.Think

I think it's perfectly ok. "As well" is an idiom, and it always goes at the end of a clause.
It's just a bit more formal than "also" or "too".

I agree. The idiom 'as well' is fine here. It really doesn't make any connection with wellness in the reader's mind for a native speaker.

Presumably it is linked in origin, but so far removed that there is no link any more to people who are used to it. Only more meticulous learners are predisposed to notice these things! Whistle

eg - healthy
He is as well as can be expected for a man who has been shot
He is not feeling well.
plus, also
He was shot as well as stabbed.
His friend was shot as well.

I see, thanks a lot, Thar and Marek!

These are exactly the kinds of context that I had doubts about, so this addresses my question perfectly.

He was shot as well as stabbed.
His friend was shot, as well.
He was shot, too.

Exactly what I noticed, that because there is "well" in the phrase, it can be perceived as something not going well with negative things or actions.

No, Marek, no.

We just appear to be a rather violent mob; who chose to use stabbing and shooting in those sentencesSick

We can use it any way we like; look -

"Are you witty as well as handsome?"
"Health of mind as well as health of body is the human ideal."
""Now we've met in person I see you are beautiful as well as being taltented."

All good things.
