Richard Halliburton (1900)

Halliburton was an American adventurer and pioneer of adventure journalism. He liked to recreate historical and legendary feats in his travels, such as Hannibal's passage over the Alps on an elephant and Odysseus's journey around the Mediterranean, and made his living writing and lecturing about his experiences. He is, however, perhaps best known for having swum the length of the Panama Canal. He disappeared while attempting to sail a Chinese junk, the Sea Dragon, from Hong Kong to where? More...

From Hong Kong to San Francisco on a junk?
That was a bold plan.

Halliburton's transit of the Panama Canal was actually an arduous, dangerous task. He accomplished it over a 5 day period, paddling only during daylight, wary of alligators, barracudas, and other tropical dangers. He was accompanied by a U.S. Marine sharpshooter who made use of his rifle numerous times. However, the Marine could not protect him from the sun which bore through layers of sunscreen and burned the swimmer seriously. Halliburton's passage through the canal and locks was met by both cheers and catcalls but he endured and made his mark in history as the vessel (SS Halliburton) which paid the smallest toll of 36 cents in the history of the canal. Details of the Canal swim as well as details of his many triumphs and occasional failures are vividly represented in my carefully (15 years) researched book, "A Shooting Star Meets the Well of Death, Why and How Richard Halliburton Conquered the World," Moonshine Cove Press, by William R. Taylor.
