I think that it may be understood while using an informal language as inviting somebody to disclose some rough, unpolished idea.

To throw shades means something completely different.

throw shade
slang To subtly issue insults or expressions of disapproval.

To dance to electronic music, at a rave or the like. the practice of making box-like punching motions in the air.
I can't really see Brian throwing shapes in the church of dance.
