My son asked me, "Where are his legs?"
"This is a picture. He took the picture of his upper body."I told him.

Does it sound natural?

Yeah - it's natural enough.
With children, whatever makes sense to them is the best view of what is "good communication"!

"He only took the picture of his top half."
"Down there, under his yo-yo." (pointing to the bottom of the picture)

It's always going to be something surprising, which makes you think of the answer 'on the spur of the moment'.
No matter what you prepare for, kids always manage to find a question you haven't thought of! Dancing Dancing
