self-reliance

(noun) Personal independence.

Synonyms: self-direction, self-sufficiency, autonomy

Usage: I should have thought you had learned self-reliance on Berande, instead of needing to lean upon the moral support of every whisky-guzzling worthless South Sea vagabond.

Many women who chose or were forced to take "traditional"
paths for women , such as being a wife and mother without
educational or professional goals or accomplishments ,
learned it was sometimes to their advantage to pursue self-reliance
through education and career pursuits , especially after
experiencing widowhood, divorce or the failing health of
a family member.

Self-reliance is a wise and useful behavior to adopt as it is well explained in the definition given .But i don't agree with what i consider as a discrimination found in that definition when it refers to the south sea vagabond .I believe it should be vagabond with no qualification adjectif added to it. Neither south nor north .

Some interesting definitions on this word are:

Hoe one's own row
Pull one's self up by one's own boot straps
