He went on a pilgrimage to Mecca.
He attended a pilgrimage to Mecca.

What other verbs can be used in relation to a pilgrimage?

He undertook a pilgrimage to Mecca.

(I wouldn't use "attended" - that implies a static event, such as a meeting, whereas a pilgrimage is a journey.)
