Hello respected teachers,

Shouldn't the articles for "Pastor" be omitted as it is a proper noun?

The man whom we mistook for the Pastor is the Pastor's friend.

The custom of speaking is the original and only just standard of any language. Joseph Priestly- Rudiments of EG, 1761.

Article "the" is required before a noun which has become definite as a result of being mentioned a second time.In the given sentence, the noun "pastor" is connected with the preceding noun "man". So,the identification of the person being referred is definite. Hence, the use of term "the pastor" is justified.

It is useful to know that "pastor" is a common noun and its plural is "pastors". Usually, the common noun "pastor" does not start with a capital letter. However, when "pastor" is used before a name, a capital letter is used as in "Pastor Thompson" and "Pastor Mark Massaro". However, I have come across a few publishing houses that have occasionally used "Pastor" starting with a capital letter. I guess it is the style of the publication house!

It is not a name. It is a job title, and a personal appellation.

Since any place would only have one pastor, you could give him the title and omit the name because you know who it is - but it is still a noun, not a proper noun.

eg

Quote:
Despite rumors and suspicions, Pastor John Gray is not associated with the controversial Hillsong Church that allegedly helped Bieber out of his downward spiral (that pastor's name is Carl Lentz, who happens to also dress in unsuspecting plaid). John Gray is the Associate Pastor at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.

That short piece has all the points
1 he is a pastor - if this were a mainstream Church, that would mean he has been ordained by some sort of
official organisation, but for the individual non-conformist Churches you can just call yourself a pastor.
2 his name is John Gray, so he is Pastor John Gray. If he is your pastor, obviously the name is not needed and you just call him the Pastor.
3 his job in this particular church is actually to be an Associate Pastor.

It is like having a doctor who serves the community, and calling him the Doctor. It is a job title but it means a specific person and confers the respect of his position, when you know who they are talking about.
